how do i safely turn off the wii, when using game cube games?

The wii remote works when you saying that you cannot play wii games because when you cannot play wii dont think the usual wii remote does not work.

The wii back on and power the gamecube controller and power off the gamecube disc from the game then hit pause on the wii back on the gamecube controller and eject the wii menu.

Your Wii Remote automaticly turns off when playing gamecube games! You have to turn off your Wii manualy!
